A successful retirement takes careful planning and education on your part. In advance of your planned retirement, verify that you will meet the age and service requirements as stipulated in your union's contract, meet with your financial advisor and consult with your retirement system. New York State and Local Retirement System
If you are a member of New York State and Local Employees’ Retirement System (ERS):
The Retirement System recommends submitting a Request For Estimate (FORM # RS6030) approximately eighteen months away from retirement eligibility. This is not required, but will facilitate the processing of your actual retirement application. Make sure to include all dates and locations of public service on your request. Contact the retirement system for information on your benefits and advice on how to maximize your pension benefit. Review specific information, such as your estimated date of retirement and age as of that date, to determine any impact on your pension benefit. The best way to obtain this information is to schedule an appointment at a local consultation site. You are responsible for filing your notarized Application for Service Retirement (Form # RS6037) with ERS within 15-90 days of your date of retirement. Any pension benefits you may be entitled to are dependent upon your completing the application process per ERS requirements and submitting all required paperwork directly to ERS per their instructions.

New York State Teachers' Retirement System
If you are a member of New York State Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS):
Contact the retirement system for information on your benefits and advice on how to maximize your pension benefit. Request an estimate of benefits. Review specific information, such as your estimated date of retirement and age as of that date, to determine any impact on your pension benefit. The best way to obtain this information is to schedule a one-on-one benefit consultation. If you have any service time prior to your membership date make sure to discuss this with the consultant. You are responsible for filing your notarized Service Retirement Application (RET-54) with TRS within 30-90 days of your date of retirement. Any pension benefits you may be entitled to are dependent upon your completing the application process per TRS requirements and submitting all required paperwork directly to TRS per their instructions.

Health Insurance Benefits
Refer to your Collective Bargaining Agreement for minimum service requirements for benefit eligibility at retirement.
You must be enrolled in a health, prescription and/or dental benefit plan prior to retirement. If you are planning on retiring in the current school year make sure your benefit coverage is in place. Contact Tracy Sheridan at 315-622-7978 before the open enrollment period (Jan 1st) if not already enrolled in a District sponsored health plan.
In most cases, your benefits will not change and you will be invoiced quarterly for your health insurance premiums. As you or your spouse approach 65, it is imperative that you contact the district regarding Medicare and Classic Blue Secure coverage (see Medicare Parts A & B information below). Medicare Parts A & B Information
Medicare Parts A & B -
Typically, if you are retired and attain age 65, you must enroll in Medicare Parts A & B. You may waive Part B, if you are actively employed beyond the age of 65, until you retire. Part A is automatic but you will pay a premium for Part B. If you do not elect Part B and do not qualify for delayed enrollment, you may be assessed a penalty by Medicare and have reduced claim payments by Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield. It is your responsibility to notify us when you and/or your spouse turn 65 years old.
Medicare Disability Part B -
If your spouse is receiving Medicare Part A due to a disability, he/she must enroll in Medicare Part B, whether or not they are 65 years old, once you retire from the district. There are very few exceptions of this law. Penalties and reduced claim payments may be assessed.
Actively employed past age 65 -
If you are over age 65, actively employed and plan on retiring soon, you will need to apply for Medicare Parts A & B at least 30 days in advance of your retirement. Contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 for enrollment information.
