Tuesday, May 12, 2015

Liverpool High School is pleased to play host to The American Cancer Society 21st Annual Relay Frelayforlifeor Life of Liverpool on June 5  and 6. The event will take place from 5 p.m. on Friday, June 5, through 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 6,  at the Liverpool High School Stadium (4338 Wetzel Rd, Liverpool).

The public is invited to join hundreds of volunteers and participants at this community event to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and take action to finish the fight against cancer.

The opening ceremony, which includes a special Survivors and Caregivers Lap, will happen at 7 p.m. on June 5th. Soon after there will be a special lifesaver lap for our healthcare providers, a heroes lap to honor our active and retired servicemen and public servants and a youth lap to thank our youngest Relayers who are walking for a future without cancer.

At 9:30 p.m. we hold the Luminaria Ceremony to honor cancer survivors and remember those lost to cancer. The closing ceremony will be at 6:30 a.m. on June 6th. The Liverpool Relay theme this year is to “A Night at the Movies: Lights, Camera, Relay!"

Relay For Life is a community-wide event where teams and individuals “camp out” at the LHS Stadium, and take turns walking or running around the track. The American Cancer Society's motto is, “cancer never sleeps, so for one night neither do we”. Relay For Life raises awareness of cancer prevention and detection, as well as services for those currently battling the disease, while raising much needed funds in the fight for the cure. Four million people participated in more than 6,000 events worldwide in 2014. Last year, more than 500 people participated in Liverpool and raised more than $62,000!

“The Relay For Life movement has been uniting communities across the globe for over 30 years to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all,” said Andrea Aquino, ACS community manager for the Relay For Life of Liverpool. “This is the community’s opportunity to fight back against cancer.”

Cancer touches all of our lives, so let’s unite and raise money together!
